Obituary of Myra Ellen Dorman

RENSSELAERVILLE – Myra E. Dorman, 79, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Myra Ellen Dorman (nee Clark) was born in Westerleigh, Staten Island, New York on August 13, 1935. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and St. Peter's High School for Girls, Staten Island, NY and attended New York University. She married Alexander Dorman in 1953 and they moved to Great Kills, Staten Island, New York. They moved with their five children in 1969 to Rensselaerville, New York. Myra was active in her community, initially as a Cub Scouts Den Mother, then moving on to serving in numerous elected and non-elected positions, including as Rensselaerville Town Supervisor, Town Councilman, and member of the Boards of the Greenville School District and the Rensselaerville Library. She taught weaving and textile art classes at Russell Sage College and Holy Name Academy, both in Albany, New York, and she also taught at Capital District Art Center. She was a well known textile artist, teaching privately and weaving on private commission. She belonged to various weaving guilds, including Hudson Mohawk Weavers Guild, The Helderberg Handweavers, the New York Guild of Handweavers and the Arachne Weavers. She exhibited her weavings for many years with these groups. Many weavers in the Capital District area were introduced to their weaving career by Myra. Myra is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, Alexander Dorman, together with their sons: Alexander, Clark, Christopher and Jefferson. She was predeceased by their daughter Kathleen. She is also survived by her brothers Edward and Robert Clark, and their five grandchildren: Sophia, Alexandra, Michael, Nathan, and Zachary Dorman.
